This is my progress of bark texture study and umm yeah, you can see I did it on one layer and did it traditional style.
No special effects.
I just got intuos 4 tablet woohoo!!!
It's for CA thread called What does everybody looks like at [link] - when I saw that pic ref, I knew it would help me to get more used to my tablet and at the same time, learn how to do photo realistic texture, as you can see, it was perfect!

Although you use a different program - this method (and even that lovely new toy you have) will work very well for GIMP users
